Trends vs Service Identity- The Gel Tip Conversation
After almost 40 years behind a nail table, one thing I’ve learned is this: Trends will always come and go. But your service identity is what build your career.
Recently, I did an Instagram Live demonstrating full coverage gel tip application, similar to Gel-X style systems. And it made me reflect on when i first saw this technology 8 years ago at a trade show.
At the time, I remember thinking it was interesting… but I wasn’t sure it would become mainstream.
Fast forward to today-and these full coverage tip systems are highly requested by clients everywhere.
And that’s important to talk about.
Client Demand vs Professional Identity
Just because something is popular does not mean it has to become your specialty.
And just because you don’t specialize in something does not mean you shouldn’t understand it.
This is where professional maturity lives.
In this industry, trends move fast. But service identity is built slowly.
Your service identity should be based on:
~What you believe in professionally
~What you can repeat consistently
~What gives clients long-term success
~What allows you to sustain your career physically and mentally
My Personal Service Philosophy
Over the decades, I built my career around:
>Longevity focused nail services
>Natural nail support
>Predictable grow out systems
>Consistent maintenance clients
And that’s okay.
There is room in this industry for many service approaches.
Why Understanding Trends Still Matters
Even if a trend doesn’t become your specialty, education is important.
Understanding what clients are requesting helps you:
`Communicate confidently
`Educate clients professionally
`Make informed service decisions
`Stay current without losing your identity
You can respect a trend.
Understand a trend.
Even demonstrate a trend.
Without becoming the trend.
Where Full Coverage Tip Systems May Fit
These systems can make sense for:
~Quick transformation services
~Special event nails
~Clients wanting instant lenght and shape
~High volume service environments
Where They May Not Fit Every Tech
They may not align with techs who specialize in:
`Long-term natural nail growth systems
`Structured builder or hard gel sculpting
`High retention maintenance clients
The Legacy Nail Tech Perspective
Your career is not built on one product. Or one service. Or one trend.
It is built on what you can repeat… For decades.
Trends are tools. Not identities.
And long term success comes from consistency, trust, and clarity in what you offer.
Final Thought
You don’t have to chase every trend to stay relevant.
You just have to build something real enough… to last
