As a nail technician with nearly 40 years of experience, one of the questions I hear more often these days is:
“What does HEMA-free mean?”
You may have also seen terms like TPO-free, HPMA-free, or even 3-Free Gel Products and wondered what they actually mean and whether they matter for your nails.
Today I want to share a little information about these ingredients, why they are commonly used in nail products, and why I chose to add HEMA, TPO, and HPMA-free options to the Nails Done Right product line.
What Does HEMA-Free Mean?
HEMA stands for 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate, an ingredient commonly found in gel polish, builder gels, and other light-cured nail products.
HEMA helps improve:
- Product adhesion
- Durability
- Wear time
- Flexibility
For most people, HEMA-containing products perform beautifully. However, some individuals may develop sensitivities or allergic reactions after repeated exposure.
Because of this, many professional nail brands have begun developing HEMA-free alternatives designed to provide excellent wear while reducing the risk of sensitivity.
What Is TPO?
TPO stands for Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide.
That is certainly a mouthful!
TPO is a photoinitiator used in gel nail products. Its job is to help products cure properly when exposed to a UV or LED nail lamp.
In recent years, TPO has received increased attention due to concerns about skin irritation and potential long-term health risks. As a result, many manufacturers have started creating TPO-free alternatives.
What Is HPMA?
HPMA stands for 2-Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate.
Like HEMA, HPMA is a methacrylate commonly used in nail enhancement products to improve performance and adhesion.
While HPMA is often used as an alternative ingredient, some professionals and clients prefer products that are free from both HEMA and HPMA when seeking lower-sensitivity options.
What Does “3-Free” Mean?
When a nail product is labeled 3-Free, it generally means it is formulated without:
- HEMA
- TPO
- HPMA
These products are designed for clients and nail professionals who prefer to avoid these ingredients while still enjoying durable, beautiful nail enhancements.
Why I Added HEMA, TPO & HPMA-Free Products
To be completely honest, I wasn’t experiencing any problems with the products I was already using.
Throughout four decades of doing nails, I’ve only had a handful of guests experience product sensitivities, and most of those occurred many years ago while I was still working with traditional acrylic systems.
When I transitioned into gel products, reactions became extremely rare. In fact, since developing my own line of professional nail products, I have not had any guests experience a product-related reaction.
So why introduce HEMA-free options?
Because I believe in continuing to learn, evolve, and offer the very best options available.
If a product performs beautifully and may offer a gentler alternative for some clients, I think it’s worth exploring.
The nail industry is constantly evolving, and I believe staying educated and open to innovation benefits both nail professionals and the guests we serve.
My Standards for Every Product I Use
When testing products for the Nails Done Right line, I have two non-negotiable requirements:
No Strong Chemical Odor
If you’ve ever walked into a salon and immediately been overwhelmed by strong smells, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
I prefer products that perform exceptionally well without filling the room with harsh chemical odors.
Minimal to No Heat Spike
Many gel users have experienced a “heat spike” during curing.
After extensive testing on hundreds of guests, only one client reported a very mild warming sensation with the 3-Free Top Coat, and no one reported sensitivity with the 3-Free Base Coat.
That level of comfort is important to me.
The HEMA-Free Products I Currently Offer
HEMA-Free Non-Acid Primer
This is the first product applied during a gel service and helps create exceptional adhesion while supporting long-lasting wear.
HEMA, TPO & HPMA-Free Base Coat
The foundation of your gel service and the first light-cured product applied directly to the natural nail.
HEMA, TPO & HPMA-Free No-Cleanse Top Coat
The final layer of protection and shine applied to your nails. Because it sits on the surface, it is also the product most likely to come into occasional skin contact during everyday wear.
Do HEMA-Free Nail Products Last as Long?
This is probably the question I hear most often.
Many of my longtime guests tell me:
“Linda, my nails hold up so well that I don’t really care which one you use. If the HEMA-free products work just as well, then why not?”
And honestly, that’s been my experience too.
When applied properly and paired with professional nail preparation, today’s high-quality HEMA-free products can provide beautiful, long-lasting results.
Final Thoughts
After nearly 40 years behind the nail table, I still love learning about new products, new technology, and better ways to care for the guests who trust me with their nails.
Whether you choose traditional gel products or HEMA-free alternatives, my goal remains the same: to provide beautiful, durable nail enhancements while using professional products I feel confident applying to every guest.
I truly am grateful for the incredible women who have supported my career over the years. Many have been sitting at my nail table for decades, and their loyalty, friendship, and trust continue to inspire me every day.
I often look around my studio and have to pinch myself.
This little nail career has given me a lifetime of wonderful relationships, and for that, I am deeply thankful.
xo,
Linda
